This study is performed utilizing the 64-slice helical CT. After colon cleansing preparation and distention of the colon with air, the abdomen and pelvis are scanned. The images provide a detailed view of the lining of the colon for the radiologist to assess the presence of polyps or tumors. Current standard suggest colon cancer screening should be initiated at age 50 or sooner depending on family history.
Consult your health care provider for appropriateness of the exam with regard to your age, family history and medical history.
Schedule your exam at Parkview Imaging. It will take less than 1 hour.
Follow instructions for colon cleansing after obtaining a prep kit from our office.
Arrive a few minutes early to register.
On the CT exam table, the technician will insert a small tube into the rectum and insufflate the colon with air (5 minutes).
The abdomen and pelvis will then be CT scanned (5 minutes).
You are done! You may return to work or play.
The radiologist will report the findings to you (and your doctor if you wish) within 24 hours.
The CT scan also visualizes/evaluates the liver, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, gallbladder, aorta and either prostate or uterus and the radiologist will comment on them.
In summary, the advantages are:
NO ANESTHESIA.
"In and out" of the imaging center in less than 1 hour.
Accurate assessment of the colon for polyps, which are the precursor to colon cancer. If polyps are discovered, they can be removed by conventional colonoscopy. Colon cancer is a preventable disease.
Return to work or play immediately after exam.
The study includes the visualization/evaluation of all of the solid organs in the abdomen and pelvis.
Colon cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths and it can be prevented
analogous to cessation of smoking reducing lung cancer deaths.
